• introducing…
  • I’ve welcomed a new camera into the family :) It’s really becoming quite the collection, one of these days I’ll share a photo of each of them and my favourite photo they have taken.

I am really looking forward to seeing what I can produce with the Zenit, I’ve seen some wonderful results on flickr, and also read some scathing reviews of this old soviet powerhorse.

If I make it into the Buddha Birthday Celebration at Southbank this weekend, I’ll take him along. There’ll be a lot of colour and activity that will be great to capture on film as well as digitally… actually Holga would be better, but three cameras is overkill :)

  • monday’s ferris wheel
  • I can’t seem to resist taking photographs of the ferris wheel at Southbank, and because I’m walking past it every Monday evening now on my way to my illustration class I’m guessing this will become a new Monday ritual.

As I took this photo I decided to take a digital photography course and then I started thinking about a new camera :) I’ve been flooding my flickr stream with iPhone pictures, which is fine for snapshots, but it’s time for an upgrade. I have my Fuji which takes surprisingly nice pictures for a camera it’s age and resolution and I’ll start keeping that in my bag instead of the holga.

I’m really happy with the iPhone 3GS camera so far – the performance is really good for a phone camera. Then there’s the photography apps :)

I downloaded CameraBag this afternoon, it’s so fast & easy to use, plus the filters it uses aren’t completely over the top tacky like some I spotted… glowing edges make my eyes bleed.

There’s Helga (Holga type vignetting), 1974, Magazine, & 1962 are my particular favourites.

    Carousel by Lady Vervaine

I was playing around with the Google Labs Similar Images and ended up on flickr searching for pictures of carousel / merry-go-round horses taken with holgas. I love this photo, the tone and rich colour, the tell tale holga softness near the edges and slight vignetting, the choice of 3 a second exposure is perfect. I think the results speak for themselves.

I have a thing for ornate carousels with interesting animals, do you see the Rooster?! Such beautiful detailing. Fantastic :)

We’ve had beautiful weather the past couple of days, I wish it would last because I’m not ready for winter yet.

  • not so boring
  • South Bank, Holga long exposure Fujichrome Provia

Even though it’s very clear I didn’t use a tripod or lean on anything to hold my arm steady, I love this long exposure picture of South Bank at night. I mentioned a while ago the reasons why I thought this photo wouldn’t turn out, so it definitely exceeds my expectations :)

Unfortunately a series of photographs that did not exceed my expectations are the ones I took at the contemporary chinese exhibition at GOMA – there was one I was so looking forward to seeing, it showed John across the room looking at some paintings he really enjoys, so it was going to be a great shot… not enough light! But never fear, I’ll post it to flickr anyway :)

  • on the way to work
  • Fortitude Valley, Holga, Fujichrome Provia

Walking over Wickham Street from the train station into McWhirters. I like the view through these wonderfully 70′s triangle windows. Buildings on one side, sky on the other. While the recent renovations to the Valley train station was so overdue, I’m hoping they don’t try to ‘modernise’ this walkway, I like it the way it is. It’s a sunny little tunnel with beautiful light in fine weather & dingy and outdated looking on overcast days.

  • poladroid
  • I’m sure everyone by now has seen the results of or tried out poladroid. I played around with it last year & saved these images but only uploaded one other to flickr.

I came across these & was reminded of one of the reasons I started to want a Holga so much. The interesting & different effects you can achieve by experimenting with a toy camera – without any guarantees you can ever replicate the results.

I actually love this bee picture un-poladroided :) I’ve tried often to catch bees in flight & I think this is the best result I’ve ever managed to get. I particularly like that he isn’t smack in the middle of the picture, it’s like a little scene in which a bee happens to be flying into the rose just at that moment.

country villiage feel, holga, fujichrome provia

There’s nothing really to this photo, but I like it. The muted colours, fogging in the corner and vignetting. Whenever I look out at this view I wonder what demented child enjoys playing on that tyre wall, none that I’ve ever seen.
