Helveticons

Really nice ones too! You see so many tacky, ugly or incomplete/un-uniform* icon and interface icon sets out there. I really like these, clear and representative, well drawn and consistent stylistically across the packages. I love that they’re based on the structure and appearance of Helvetica. Beautiful icons (& fonts for that matter) make me happy which is pretty sad I guess :-)

I found myself in an argument once that lasted a couple of weeks back & forth about what constitutes an icon vs a symbol – to me these are icons because even though their meaning has to be learned they look like what they might be representing, they look like a real object. The other person believed that because the meaning of images like these aren’t universally known representations of anything overruled that they looked like ‘things’ and would make them symbols.

Pointless argument? Probably :-) but still interesting and I’d love to get a real experts opinion on this.

New Years Resolutions VIA

I’ve been thinking for some time of ditching Safari in favour of Google Chrome and this video has me wanting to do it now. Besides being a fun promo, the fact that in Chrome a crashed tab wont crash the whole browser and google’s claims of faster speeds had me downloading and installing.

I’ve always really liked Safari but after a few days (I don’t shut down my laptop & often have multiple tabs left open, the same ones for days at a stretch) it’s seems to clog up almost, grinds to a halt and becomes maddeningly slow taking up to a minute to open a new tab. I don’t want to change the way I work, so on to Chrome.

Had a great laugh with this website this morning, if you can pronounce them how can you go with words like entschlossene Herzenswunscherfüllungsarbeit (determined heart’s desire granting work), and Stolzbefleckte Schadenreue (pride-bespeckled damage remorse).

This sort of system would be so useful while selecting fonts, especially when you’re collaborating with other designers or working with clients. I’d love to get my hands on one for an afternoon!

Using the top blogs, design, game, and global sites listed by Alexa and Technorati, design studio ANTREP04 have created posters showing the dominant colours used in an effort to answer the question: What is the colour of the internet?

Greens & yellows dominate game sites, reds & pinks on blogs, globally blues are the most used colours, & design sites? Greys & neutrals :)

I love apps like this :) Unfortunately a large number of my fonts are true type because it only displays the open type fonts you have installed on your machine, but still fun to play around with. This is potentially a very useful tool.

I’m especially interested in the option to browse random commercial fonts & also the ability to find similar commercial fonts to those you have installed. So often these sort of *display similar* font finders are more miss than hit, but you never know where you’re going to stumble over your new favourite type :)
