Helveticons

Really nice ones too! You see so many tacky, ugly or incomplete/un-uniform* icon and interface icon sets out there. I really like these, clear and representative, well drawn and consistent stylistically across the packages. I love that they’re based on the structure and appearance of Helvetica. Beautiful icons (& fonts for that matter) make me happy which is pretty sad I guess :-)

I found myself in an argument once that lasted a couple of weeks back & forth about what constitutes an icon vs a symbol – to me these are icons because even though their meaning has to be learned they look like what they might be representing, they look like a real object. The other person believed that because the meaning of images like these aren’t universally known representations of anything overruled that they looked like ‘things’ and would make them symbols.

Pointless argument? Probably :-) but still interesting and I’d love to get a real experts opinion on this.

*what’s the correct word for not uniform?

I love the graphics on this poster spotted on the Queen St Mall entrance to Myer (Brisbane), pretty sure it’s part of the holiday/christmas shopping season promotions. I took many photos dreaming of running home and playing with some paper, and of course promptly forgot :)

365 Typefaces from 180 Designers & Foundries in 30 Countries. This is probably the third 2010 calendar I’ve looked at and thought Ooooo that’s the calendar for me! 2010 might be the year for multiple wall and desktop calendars :)

I am sorely tempted to dismantle this book and hang the beautiful illustrations on my wall. I’d love a print of the front cover in the very least, on the look out now :)

Part of a very cool set on flickr of German Emergency Currency, Notgeld, from between 1914 and 1923. The set owner gives a very interesting history of these notes originally belonging to his Wife’s family, I highly recommend viewing the entire set, for the history as much for the beautiful examples of German design.

It’s about whittling. It’s about taking something and whittling and whittling and getting it sharp and perfect. Then you’ve got something.

There is so much to love about this font – I must have it! :)

When I realised it is designed by Kevin Cornell of Bearskinrug, I was not surprised I like it so much – I like his style of illustration. Take a look at the top right hand corner of this page (The Bear) I love it!

I’ve been collecting a list of original book cover designs that I really like, my favourite so far is Rabbit, Run.

With Slaughterhouse-Five a close second.
