I was happy to find Issue 4 of UPPERCASE in my mailbox last week, even though I regularly buy other magazines this is the first that I’ve subscribed to… I must admit that was mostly due to the Issue 1 cover design. I wanted this magazine and it took me so long to get it, instead of subscribing directly from them in Canada I went through their one and only Australian stockist – six months later I see Issue 3!
Enough complaining :) This issues cover was designed by San Franciscan illustrator Leigh Wells, her work is a fine example of those times I feel sadly jealous that I am not a talented illustrator.

I really like the artwork for the Sydney 2010 The Finders Keepers. Definitely take a look at the website of the artist Madeleine Stamer. I missed last years Brisbane event and I’m so looking forward to our time to come around again.
My posts have been pretty sparse these past couple of days I know and I haven’t had a chance for any knitting – I have a work contract for a few weeks that sees me having to actually get dressed and leave the house rather than sit at my own desk all day. It’s pretty enjoyable work so it’s worth the sacrifice of having to change out of pyjamas in the morning and not being able to say blog in the middle of the day or take a knitting/lunch break :)

I love these shoes from the Fall / Winter 2009 collection by Martha Davis. I’m on the look out for some interesting ankle high boots for winter… oh I really like these! Have you heard the saying, “If you need to ask how much something is you can’t afford it”? Well I think this will be the case with these boots :)
I quite like a couple of the Martha Davis look books, one page styled shoe on model, next page shoes stand alone. I feel like a shopping spree, and designing look books!
- bike that folds

This is one of the best looking folding bicycles I’ve seen! Take a look at the promo video on the Eye to Hand website, they describe the design of the Folding Bike as a bicycle that folds, rather than a folding bicycle. I think they’ve managed to create a bike that looks stylish while remaining sturdy & functional and not as gimmicky as other folding bikes I’ve seen.
Yay! I feel like taking a bike ride tomorrow :)

That Hobby Looks Like a Lot of Work
Interesting article on the successes and pit-falls of turning your hobby into a business. The focus is on women who have quit their day jobs and used etsy to sell their art. This is something I have been considering for some time, I set up a new etsy account which you can see is completely bare and spoke to a number or artists/craftists who sell their wares by combining multiple online shopfronts and markets around the state. I think the best advice I received was to just put something out there, and then keep going.
For me, 2010 is the time to see what I can do :)

Coolest Clock Ever? from A3Network
I’m posting this because a. I think it’s an interesting and creative idea that took quite a lot of dedication and patience from the artist to film himself redrawing the time, and b. The idiotic comments and the posters’ need to point out that there is no man inside this clock…. wtf?
Reading that gave me a bit of an eyebrow raise, surely people don’t need it spelt out to them that there isn’t a little man inside the clock continually redrawing the minute hand on this clock?! That’s my grumble for the day :)

bright bulbs & merry flakes bamboo christmas cards purchased from
I found these christmas cards in Biome yesterday and it’s a pretty sure bet we’ll be heading back in to pick up more. The designs are very sweet and printed on eco-friendly sustainably harvested bamboo, this was my idea for new business cards for myself for quite a while but the company I was going to have make them didn’t have bamboo quite this thin. They are made in the USA thought… so a lot of the friendliness to the environment is probably cancelled out by however they got into the country, but still a great design and idea.
The first card just made me smile, I think I’ll give it to a friend who has been joking lately that she’s “just a ray of fucking sunshine” :D I know it’s not a sun :) but it’s such a sweetly happy sunshiney card that it will make her laugh, also she’ll appreciate the differentness of the card.
It’s when presented with situations like these I wish I had the opportunity to take more hand lettering and typography subjects while studying, I’m not too bad but my styles are limited. Last year I took an illustration and fine drawing class externally, so this be the year of photography and hand lettering classes :)

I had to take a photo of this wine bottle I spotted last night. The paper of the label is an oh so slightly off-white with a lovely texture, the illustration is very sweet and I love the overall design, but what really grabbed me is the crazy hypnotic eye of the bird… what the? It’s fantastic and baffling.
